For over two decades, the playbook for job hunting was simple: open a search bar, type a rigid job title or career focus and a zip code, and wade through pages of mismatched links.
That playbook is officially expiring.
In a recent episode of the DE Talk Podcast, host AJ Selvey sat down with Ben Russell, co-founder of SonicJobs, to break down how artificial intelligence and conversational search are transforming how job seekers discover opportunities.
Here are a few key takeaways from their conversation:
- From Keywords to Natural Conversations: Job seekers no longer want to translate their lives into generic keywords like “jobs near me”. Instead of filtering through hundreds of irrelevant results, candidates increasingly expect to explain their specific situations, shift needs, and skills in natural language—and receive targeted guidance in return.
- The “Invisible Employer” Risk: With AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini growing five times faster than Google did in its early days, search behavior is consolidating. Unlike traditional search engines with multiple pages of results, AI search tools deliver direct answers. If an employer isn’t surfaced in those answers, they are effectively invisible.
- Eliminating Bad Friction: While some “good friction” ensures candidates are serious and qualified, hurdles like repetitive resume entry, mobile-unfriendly flows, and unnecessary steps cause applicant drop-off to skyrocket.
- Meeting Candidates on Career Sites: Employers don’t have to tear down their existing applicant tracking systems (ATS) or rebuild their websites from scratch. By layering conversational AI onto existing career sites, companies can provide a dynamic, recruiter-like experience while capturing firsthand data on what candidates actually care about.
