Getting to Know: Michael Goldberg
In recognition of Member Appreciation Week we are kicking off a new blog series in which we conduct short, fun interviews with our staff, Board of Directors, Members and other industry professionals. Today we’re starting with our new Executive Director, Michael Goldberg.
What does a day on the job look like for you?
Well, it has only been a few days so for now- meetings, meetings, strategy, meetings so I can immerse myself into the business and help DE employees be successful.
How do you get your day started?
Listen to an audio book on Audible.
What is your favorite social media platform and why?
I really like Twitter and the ability to bring yourself to life through Periscope.
iPhone or Android – what kind of phone do you have?
What is the background photo on your phone? A picture of the Brooklyn Bridge the day my family walked across it this past July.
What’s your favorite HR blog/resource?
What do you like to do for fun?
I read a lot, I like to walk 5-7 miles on the weekends and travel for fun
Do you listen to music while you work? If so, what do you listen to?
I like Johnny Cash and the Rolling Stones while I work. Of course, I will put on Neil Diamond to belt out a verse of Sweet Caroline, even when the Red Sox aren’t playing.
What’s your favorite thing about your job?
Finding people jobs when I was a practitioner in corporate recruiting. Today, I love being the champion for DirectEmployers and our mission, as well as the team members who make up this great organization.
What tech gadgets can’t you live without?
Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones, iPhone, and laptop
Last movie you watched?
“I Know that Voice”, which is a documentary about the world of voiceover acting. Really cool and funny.
Last book you read?
The Goal: A Process for Ongoing Improvement by Eliyahu Goldratt and Jeff Cox.
Best job advice you ever received?
“Don’t go to the buffet table on an empty stomach”. Today there are too many shiny metal objects in our industry, especially in the world of talent acquisition. As practitioners we are always jumping in feet-first without testing the waters to see if it will work in the department and/or in our industry. In other words, go after projects that will yield you small yet impactful wins with your business partners.
What is your non-HR dream job?
Run a 5 Star Resort on several Caribbean islands.
As a two-time former Member, why would you recommend a company become a Member of DirectEmployers?
As a Member, I always felt I was in the best hands with the membership, compliance, and digital strategy teams. AJ, Seth, and Candee always had my company’s back. Finally, I was given incredible service and opportunities to beta new products and solutions.
What is your favorite thing about attending DEAM?
Hands down, it is one of the best conferences. Over the last 5 years, I have attended three, spoken at two and sang at one. I meet so many incredibly smart people and have the chance to share best practices. For $95 per attendee, it’s the best conference deal on the market today.
